(Tucson, March 1, 2010) – Absolute Auto Glass LLC auto windshield repair and replacement shop is starting the first windshield recycling program in Western US.
The recycling of automotive windshields could reduce the amount of automotive "fluff" that goes to landfills by about three percent, according to USCAR's recycling partnership.
According to J.D. Snyder, CEPES's director of the Recycling Materials Center, over 70 tons of windshield material per month is currently land filled by Henderson Glass, a Michigan chain of 33 glass replacement stores. This demonstrates the volume of windshields that can be diverted from landfills, potential cost savings from avoided costs of disposal, costs of collection and processing operations, and marketed material prices.
Why should we recycle? Recycling conserves our valuable natural resources!
For example plastic bottles can be recycled into new plastic bottles and polyester fibers for use in fleece jumpers and car mats. The cullet, (crushed glass) from windshields is used in the construction industries, in roadways, waist filtering, sandblasting, countertops and more. By recycling we reduce the amount of natural resources needed to make products and packaging. Also less mining and extraction occurs, which is beneficial to the natural habitats of wild animals.
Recycling saves energy! Recycling just one plastic bottle will save enough energy to power a 60 watt light bulb for 3 hours! And less greenhouse gases are emitted.
Recycling protects the environment! Recycling reduces our dependence on landfill. With less materials going to landfill, less harmful emissions like methane gases are released into the earth's atmosphere.
Recycling can save you money! When you purchase recycled materials, it is usually cheaper than the original.
